Brazil Election: Flávio Bolsonaro Wins First Round, Forces Runoff Against Lula

Brazil is heading to a presidential runoff after the top two finishers in Sunday's election failed to secure enough votes for an outright victory. Challenger Flávio Bolsonaro won the first round, beating incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva into second place. Bolsonaro is the son of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election. The runoff is scheduled for October 25th. The result marks a significant political shift, as Flávio Bolsonaro's strong showing reflects enduring support for the Bolsonaro brand despite his father's legal troubles. Lula, a veteran leftist, now faces an uphill battle to retain the presidency, with the runoff likely to intensify polarization in the country. The election outcome will have major implications for Brazil's domestic policies and its role on the global stage. As the campaign enters its final stretch, both candidates are expected to ramp up their efforts to win over undecided voters. The runoff will test the resilience of Brazil's democratic institutions and the electorate's appetite for change amid economic and social challenges.
