India's 'Bought Brides': The Trafficking Trade Devastating Women's Lives

This DW News investigation exposes the harrowing reality of women trafficked from poorer regions of India to Haryana, where they are sold as 'Paros' or 'bought brides.' The report follows the stories of survivors like Nargis, who was lured with promises of a better future but ended up being purchased by her husband for less than $400, and Jameela, who continues to suffer from violence, exploitation, and social exclusion. The practice has spawned a lucrative human trafficking trade, preying on vulnerable women and girls. Many are subjected to physical and emotional abuse, forced labor, and reproductive coercion. They are often isolated from their families and communities, with little recourse to escape. The video highlights the efforts of survivors to break free from dependency and discrimination, as well as the systemic failures that allow this trade to persist. It calls for greater awareness and action to combat trafficking and support victims in rebuilding their lives.
