Eritrean Troops Enter Ethiopia's Tigray, Threatening Regional War

Eritrean troops have deployed in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, multiple sources said Wednesday, threatening to turn an internal conflict into a wider regional war. Fighting broke out between the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and Ethiopian federal forces on September 23, sparking fears of a return to the devastating 2020-2022 civil war. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of backing the rebels, and the two neighbours severed diplomatic ties last week. The reported incursion by Eritrean forces raises the stakes in a conflict that has already displaced thousands and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis. Eritrea's involvement could draw in other regional powers and destabilize the Horn of Africa. International observers are calling for restraint, but diplomatic channels appear strained. The situation remains fluid, with reports of clashes near the border. FRANCE 24's coverage provides the latest updates and analysis on this escalating crisis.
