Kenyan Cult Leader Convicted of Murdering 191 in Shakahola Forest Massacre

A self-proclaimed Kenyan preacher and his associates were found guilty on Monday of murdering 190 children and one adult in a starvation cult that has become known as the "Shakahola Forest Massacre." The verdict follows the discovery of hundreds of bodies since 2023 at the cult's base inland from the Kenyan beach resort of Malindi. The case has shocked the nation and drawn international attention. The cult leader, who has not been named in the report, led a group that allegedly encouraged followers to starve themselves to death. The mass graves were discovered in the Shakahola Forest, leading to a massive forensic investigation. The convictions mark a significant step in seeking justice for the victims. The trial has highlighted the dangers of cult extremism and the need for better regulation of religious groups. The Kenyan government has faced criticism for failing to prevent the tragedy. The sentencing is expected to follow, with the possibility of life imprisonment for those convicted.
