Kenya Cult Leader Found Guilty of Murdering 191 Children and Followers

The leader of a Kenyan doomsday cult, Paul Mackenzie, has been found guilty of murdering 191 people, all but one of them children. Mackenzie ordered members of his cult to starve their children to death so they could 'meet Jesus.' His doctrine forbade education and labeled modern medicine as 'evil.' Twenty-nine other leaders of the cult were also convicted of murder. They had all pleaded not guilty, insisting that nobody was forced to die. The verdict marks a significant moment in a case that shocked Kenya and the world. The mass starvation of children under the guise of religious devotion raised questions about the regulation of religious groups and the protection of vulnerable individuals. The court found that Mackenzie and his accomplices were responsible for the deaths, rejecting their claims of voluntary martyrdom. The BBC News report provides details of the trial and the reactions from the victims' families and the community. It also examines the broader context of cult activities in Kenya and the challenges of preventing such tragedies. The sentencing is expected to follow, with the possibility of life imprisonment for the convicted leaders.
