Montana Democrat Sam Forstag Takes on GOP House Seat as Trump Visits

Sam Forstag, a smokejumper and union leader, is running as a Democrat for Montana's Republican-held House seat. His unique background as a smokejumper—a highly trained wildland firefighter—and his experience as a union leader give him a compelling story to tell voters. Forstag argues that his practical, hands-on approach can help Democrats compete in a state that has leaned Republican in recent years. As President Trump visits Montana to rally support for the Republican candidate, Forstag's campaign is gaining attention for its focus on local issues and working-class concerns. He emphasizes the need for better jobs, healthcare, and education, and positions himself as a candidate who understands the challenges facing ordinary Montanans. ABC News reports on Forstag's bid and the broader political dynamics in Montana. The race is seen as a test of whether Democrats can make inroads in rural, Republican-leaning areas by fielding candidates with authentic local ties and moderate positions. With Trump's visit underscoring the high stakes, the contest is one to watch in the upcoming midterm elections.
