African Union Launches First Continental Credit Rating Agency
The African Union launched the continent's first credit rating agency on Wednesday, seeking to provide an alternative to the "big three" global ratings agencies as debt burdens weigh on many African economies. The Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) — the creation of which African leaders endorsed in 2018 — was launched at a ceremony attended by African officials in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, where it will be based. The agency aims to offer fairer assessments of African economies, which have often been penalized by international ratings agencies. Proponents argue that the big three—Moody's, Standard & Poor's, and Fitch—have historically been biased against African countries, leading to higher borrowing costs. AfCRA's launch marks a significant step toward financial sovereignty for the continent. It will initially focus on sovereign ratings and later expand to cover corporations. The move is expected to reduce dependency on external agencies and promote investment in African markets.
