McGurk: Iran Is a 'Vexing Problem' for Every U.S. President

In this interview, Brett McGurk, author of the new book "Brink," discusses the persistent challenge Iran poses to U.S. presidents. McGurk, who served under four presidential administrations and most recently as President Joe Biden's national security staff coordinator for the Middle East, tells Compass Points host Nick Schifrin that President Donald Trump is "now grappling with something every president since Jimmy Carter has grappled with – how to deal with this revolutionary ideological system." McGurk describes Iran as a "vexing, vexing problem" that has confounded policymakers for decades. He draws on his extensive experience to explain why successive administrations have struggled to contain Iran's influence and nuclear ambitions. The conversation also touches on the broader Middle East landscape and the lessons learned from past diplomatic efforts. The interview provides a nuanced perspective on the complexities of U.S.-Iran relations and the strategic considerations that shape presidential decision-making. McGurk's insights offer viewers a deeper understanding of the historical context and the ongoing challenges.
