Pope Leo XIV Resting Peacefully After Lung Cancer Surgery

Pope Leo XIV had a "peaceful" night in the hospital following surgery on Tuesday, the Vatican's press office announced early Wednesday. The pontiff was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent an operation to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, according to a Vatican statement. The brief update from the Vatican provided little additional detail, stating only that "more information will follow later today." The surgery marks a significant health challenge for the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, who is now awaiting test results to determine whether the cancer has spread. Pope Leo XIV's recovery is being closely monitored by Catholics worldwide. The Vatican has not yet released a timeline for his recovery or any potential impact on his duties. Further updates are expected as the Pope begins his post-surgery recuperation.
