Inside the Vatican and Italy's Political Evolution: A Journalist's 25-Year View

In this episode of Bloomberg This Weekend, New York Times correspondent and former Rome bureau chief Jason Horowitz joins hosts David Gura and Christina Ruffini to share insights from his 25 years of reporting in Italy. Drawing on his firsthand experience covering the Vatican, papal transitions, and the country's shifting political landscape, Horowitz offers a unique perspective on how Italy's internal changes resonate globally. Horowitz also discusses his new memoir, The Italian Job, which chronicles his time witnessing Italy's political experiments—from the era of Silvio Berlusconi to the rise of Giorgia Meloni. He explains how these developments provide a lens for understanding broader global trends, making his observations relevant beyond Italy's borders. The conversation delves into the intersection of religion and politics, the significance of papal transitions, and the ways in which Italy serves as a bellwether for democratic shifts worldwide. Horowitz's reflections are both personal and analytical, offering viewers a rich, nuanced understanding of a country that has long been a focal point of cultural and political change.
